Suspect in Auburn library triple stabbing arrested after 9-hour manhunt
A 33-year-old arrested Tuesday night in connection with a stabbing that left three people injured at Auburn’s Placer County Library earlier that day has been identified.
The man, Opada Joseph Opada, was arrested in the 200 block of Carolyn Street about 10:40 p.m., Auburn Police Department said Wednesday evening. Opada was booked into the Placer County jail on two counts of attempted murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held without bail.
Authorities had launched a nine-hour manhunt following the attack, reported at about 1:40 p.m. at the Placer County Library at 350 Nevada St. Police released photos taken from video surveillance, which showed a man running away from the library after the stabbing incident.
Auburn Fire Department Battalion Chief Robert Zaucha said Tuesday that two people were hospitalized, one with “critical” wounds, and a third victim was treated and released at the scene. No update on the critical patient’s status has been provided.
The library, near E.V. Cain Middle School and the county’s Office of Education, was closed the remainder of Tuesday “due to an assault inside the facility,” Placer County said in a statement Tuesday.
According to the Placer County website, the library will remain closed Wednesday.
